After work, I run home to change. I told Callum that I’d meet him in front of the restaurant at five, which gives me plenty of time to wash the smell of french fries out of my hair and obsess over what to wear.

I finally decide on a pink and gray gingham dress and a pair of sandals. Callum hasn’t told me where we’re going, so sensible shoes seem like a solid idea. I pull my hair up into a high ponytail, then change my mind and leave it down. Luckily, it’s finally time to leave. Otherwise I’d just nit-pick my appearance to death.

I get butterflies in my stomach on the walk back to The Paradiso. I haven’t let myself get too worried up to this point, but I can’t hold back any longer. I really like Callum, and I’d rather not make a complete fool out of myself.

I spot him waiting for me in front of the Paradiso. He’s looking the other way, so I get the luxury of studying him a bit without him realizing. He’s wearing chinos and a navy blue t-shirt that’s hugging his muscles just right. I’m not sure how a guy who eats for a living maintains a physique like that, but you won’t hear me complaining about it.

He turns and glances in my direction, and his face breaks into a big smile. I stumble a little, as if him looking at me makes me literally weak in the knees, but luckily I recover quickly. Callum looks concerned, and my cheeks flush hot with embarrassment.

“Hey, gorgeous,” he says as I get closer.

“H-hi,” I stammer. I have no idea what to do with compliments, especially from a guy like Callum. I glance at the ground and tuck a lock of hair behind my ear.

“Here’s the thing,” he says. “I was planning to take you out to a really nice restaurant—somewhere that takes weeks to get a reservation. But then I realized I’d just be doing that to show off, and not because I thought you’d actually like it. So I scrapped those plans. Is that okay?”

I’m relieved. I would have felt out of place in my checkered sundress at a fancy place. I nod.

“I might be completely off about this, and if I am, I want you to tell me,” he says, “but how do you feel about the aquarium?”

Colden Aquarium is one of my favorite spots in the entire city. I don’t even have to say a word before Callum starts laughing; apparently my face has answered for me. “Guess I chose right, then,” he said. “Do you want to grab a cab, or walk?”

The evening is beautiful, a gentle breeze pushing cool air off the lake and tempering the day’s heat into perfection. “Let’s walk,” I say.

Our hands keep brushing as we walk, and it doesn’t take me long to realize that it’s a game we’re playing and not talking about. When we reach a crosswalk, Callum takes the opportunity to clasp my hand.
